Education

Ongoing educational opportunities will be provided for the learners and educators in adopted schools of the Moshaweng Valley through specialized, targeted instruction to improve learning outcomes.

We will provide ongoing specialist teaching where the need is greatest particularly in the disciplines of English, Science and Mathematics in grades 9 and 12 and early childhood.

We will provide all adopted schools with professional development opportunities and access to the necessary resources to facilitate teaching, learning and communication.

Early Literacy

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

The Moshaweng Valley does not have single research or recreational reading library. Most homes also have no books or support materials for students. Working with the local Education Department, we aim to ensure adequate library facilities for each school to build the skills necessary for matriculation.

STUDENTS TEACHING STUDENTS

The core of the Kalahari Education Experience is to allow our students, guided by outside and local teachers, to work with classes in the desert school. They bring resources to help support the needs of the local school, but equally important, they bring their enthusiasm and hope to the children they serve.

TECHNOLOGY AND DISTANCE LEARNING

Students in the desert may be without a math or science teacher for long periods. This reality makes clear the need for online learning technology. Working the local educational leaders, we also intend to provide real-time classroom learning from Germany and other countries using satellite communication.

MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE LEARNING METHODS

Math and Science are the key graduating subjects for students to have the possibility of tertiary training or university study. We aim to provide students with modern graphing calculators that are core-learning materials for these studies. CASIO will offer seminars focused on training the students and teachers in the use of these materials.

TEACHER LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Teachers who work in the challenging Kalahari environment need modern techniques and skills to teach effectively. These also provide a motivation for learning which they can then share with their students. Our goal is to provide a team-teaching experience where teachers from South Africa visit our schools and are paired with model teachers for professional development over a two-week period. They then return to their own communities and share the skills they have acquired.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The aim of this program is to identify students in the Moshaweng Valley schools region who would be able to obtain post-secondary qualifications. Funding and donations are actively sought to support individuals of promise who wish to contribute to their villages and communities.

Where possible Scholarships or Bursary programs will provide financial and logistical support to highly successful individuals in the areas of education, public health, and mining.

Currently, 6 students are being supported by Kalahari Trust scholarships with three who have already graduated and are seeking employment.
